A home-based vision health program offering real tools, real guidance, and a real community

About the Healing Optics Program

The Healing Optics Program (HOP) is offered through The Lotus Way, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. It is a comprehensive, home-based program for individuals living with macular degeneration, retinal conditions, and other vision health challenges.

For decades, the kind of integrative vision care HOP provides was only available in specialized clinical settings, and only to those who could travel to them, afford them, and navigate them largely on their own. HOP was built to change that.

We bring everything directly to you: a therapeutic device with an evidence-informed protocol developed and refined over more than 25 years, research-backed education, practical and actionable guidance, ongoing practitioner support, and a community of members and practitioners who are with you throughout the process.

This is not a course you take and complete. It is an ongoing program you join, with real people supporting you every step of the way.

Dr. Gene C. Bruno, OMD, LAc, FABAA

"I have been treating patients with Age Related Macular Degeneration, Juvenile Macular Degeneration, Retinitis Pigmentosa, and Diabetic Retinopathy for over 26 years. It has been an overwhelming and rewarding journey to have been a vehicle for having helped so many to regain their vision. I have given seminars on my protocol for treating these conditions to acupuncturists and doctors in Oregon, Washington, California, Illinois, Washington D.C., and Hawaii. But for the first time in decades, I found a dedicated doctor who will be more than capable of carrying on the work that Dr. Rossen and I first began, nearly three decades ago. I am speaking about Dr. Heather George. After all this time, it is an honor for me to finally put my practice in to her competent hands."

Dr. Gene C. Bruno, OMD, LAc, FABAA

Who HOP Is For

HOP is designed for adults who have been diagnosed with a macular or retinal condition and are looking for ways to actively support their vision health. Many of our members come to us after being told there is nothing more that can be done. We respectfully disagree.

We work with a range of conditions, with a particular focus on macular degeneration at all stages. Conditions we work with include:

  • Age-Related Macular Degeneration (dry and wet, all stages)

  • Stargardt Disease

  • Retinitis Pigmentosa

  • Glaucoma

  • Diabetic Retinopathy

  • Optic Nerve Atrophy

  • Other diagnosed retinal conditions

If your condition is not listed here and you are wondering whether HOP might be a fit for you, we welcome your inquiry.

What HOP Provides

HOP is a complete program. Here is what members receive:

A Therapeutic Device for Home Use

HOP members receive a therapeutic device that uses gentle, non-invasive microcurrent stimulation to support eye health and circulation. This is the same category of device used by integrative eye health practitioners around the world for over 30 years, and in clinical settings internationally. We guide you in how to use it consistently and effectively, and we are with you as you do.

Research-Backed Education

You will understand what is happening in your eyes, what the science says about the approaches we use, and why each element of the program is included. We do not ask you to trust us blindly. We give you the knowledge to understand your own situation and make informed decisions.

Practical, Actionable Guidance

Dietary strategies, lifestyle practices, targeted supplementation guidance, acupressure, and eye exercises are all part of what we teach. These are not abstract recommendations. They are specific, practical, and designed to fit into real daily life.

Ongoing Weekly Practitioner Support

Members have regular access to Dr. Heather George and Dr. Cassondra Pavlatos through live weekly group calls and a growing library of recorded weekly sessions. You are not left to figure this out on your own after an initial consultation. We are with you consistently, over time.

A Living Community

HOP members join an active community of people navigating the same journey. You hear from others who are at different stages, share what is working, ask questions in a supported environment, and experience the kind of collective encouragement that makes a real difference in long-term consistency. This community includes both members and practitioners, which means you have access to peer support and clinical perspective in the same place.

Why HOP Is Different

There are other programs and practitioners working in integrative vision health. We respect this work and in many cases share the same foundational approaches. What makes HOP distinct is how it is structured and who it is built for.

Everything comes to you

Most integrative vision care still requires you to travel to a clinic, often repeatedly, at significant expense. HOP was specifically designed so that everything you need arrives at your home. The device, the protocols, the guidance, and the community are all accessible wherever you are.

You are not doing this alone

Many programs deliver good information and then leave you to apply it on your own. HOP is built around ongoing, human support. Weekly live calls, a real community of fellow members, and direct access to practitioners mean you are accompanied through this process, not just educated and sent home.

No conflict of interest

HOP is offered through a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. No individual profit from sales. We educate on supplementation because the science supports it, not because we have a financial stake in what you buy. This structure lets us focus entirely on what serves your health.

A lineage that goes back to the source

The protocols at the heart of HOP trace directly back to pioneering work developed over 30 years ago. Dr. George trained under Dr. Gene C. Bruno, one of the most experienced practitioners in the country, if not the world, who entrusted her with carrying this work forward. That lineage matters.

The best of all worlds in one place

Therapeutic device. Evidence-informed protocol. Nutritional and lifestyle guidance. Regular weekly practitioner access. A real community. All of it through a nonprofit organization with no competing financial interests. We are not aware of another program that brings these elements together the way HOP does.

What Our Members Are Saying

The following are shared with permission from HOP members.

Results vary and are not guaranteed.

These accounts reflect the kinds of outcomes our members regularly report.

Michelle A., January 2025

"Had my annual eye exam yesterday. My dry AMD has not gotten any worse. My vision is 20/20. That was a huge relief! That's my goal! Last year at this time I was still severely nearsighted."

Marcia R., February 2025

"I am not stable, I am improved. He said: I don't know what you are doing but keep it up. You are one of the very few that will leave this office with such good news."

Cynthia B., 2025

"My left eye went from 20/150 to 20/100. My right eye went from 20/100 to 20/70. HOP is working." A few months later: "I passed my DMV and I have my license again."

Kathy, 2025

"I kind of almost had to drive at night and I was like, wait a minute, I am actually seeing."

Vicki, 2025

"I drove back from Detroit in the dark and I felt like my vision was so much better. I was so surprised. I can see like I used to."

Barbara H., February 2025

"I am STABLE and he does not need to see me for six months."

Program Leadership

HOP is led by practitioners with deep clinical experience, a shared commitment to making vision health support accessible to anyone who needs it, and a direct lineage to the pioneers of this work.

Heather George, OMD, LAc

Founder and Director of The Lotus Way and Director of the Healing Optics Program. Doctor of Oriental Medicine and Licensed Acupuncturist with over 20 years of clinical experience in integrative eye health, Eastern medicine, and holistic health education.

Dr. George trained directly under Dr. Gene C. Bruno, one of the most experienced practitioners of acupuncture-based vision care in the United States, who has treated patients with macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, diabetic retinopathy, and juvenile macular degeneration for over 26 years. She also leads the only national nonprofit scholarship foundation in the country dedicated to scholars from acupuncture and Oriental medicine programs.

Cassondra Pavlatos, AP, Dipl.OM

Development Director of the Healing Optics Program and Acupuncture Physician. Dr. Pavlatos supports participants from initial enrollment through ongoing participation in the program. She has clinical experience as an optometric technician at Nova Southeastern University with specialized training in OCT scans, visual fields, and fundus photography.

She holds a Master of Science in Oriental Medicine and three bachelor's degrees in Professional Health Studies, Biology, and French. She is NCCAOM board certified and licensed as an Acupuncture Physician in Florida. Dr. Pavlatos joined The Lotus Way after earning the Trudy McAlister Foundation Scholarship, one of the competitive scholarships administered through Dr. George's other nonprofit work.

HOP Within The Lotus Way

HOP is one of three foundational educational programs offered through The Lotus Way, alongside Auricular Therapy for Trauma and Addiction Recovery (ATTAR) and Asian Energy-work and Yoga Therapy (AEYT). Practices and concepts from AEYT are woven into the HOP curriculum, reflecting The Lotus Way's integrated approach to health and healing.

All three programs share the same foundation: education over prescription, community over isolation, and the belief that people are capable of taking meaningful action in their own health journeys when given the right tools and support.
